Crawl-Space Dehumidifier Coverage Claims Compared

What up to 1,000-7,200 sq. ft. actually tells you, and what it does not.

Research by Josiah Gavin

Coverage is guidance, not a universal rating

Manufacturers often publish maximum recommended square-foot coverage for crawl-space and whole-home dehumidifiers. Those values are useful because they show the manufacturer's intended sizing range, but they should not automatically be treated as directly equivalent engineering ratings across brands.

Real-world moisture load can change with temperature, climate, air leakage, enclosure tightness, ventilation, drainage setup, crawl space height, and installation details. Two manufacturers may also use different assumptions when translating moisture-removal capacity into a square-foot coverage statement.

DrySpace treats coverage as manufacturer-reported sizing guidance. The site does not claim manufacturers are deceptive, and it does not invent a universal square-foot methodology where the source data does not provide one.

Verified coverage claims in the database

This table is generated from the current DrySpace product records. Missing values are shown as not verified instead of being treated as zero, and AprilAire's separately labeled rated capacity remains distinct from AHAM capacity.

Why the biggest square-foot number is not enough

Similar capacity, different coverage positioning

Products in the same broad rated-capacity band can carry very different manufacturer-listed coverage values. That does not prove one value is more honest; it shows why coverage claims should be read with rating conditions, source notes, and intended application.

Pump configuration still matters

Models can share the same AHAM capacity and manufacturer-listed coverage while differing in drainage configuration. A built-in pump may be the deciding constraint when condensate must move upward or farther away.

Whole-home coverage can be broader

AprilAire records in DrySpace include broad manufacturer coverage statements for crawl spaces, basements, or whole houses. The normalized records keep those headline claims visible without replacing them with an invented crawl-space-only calculation.

Capacity terminology can shift too

Square-foot coverage is not the only field that needs context. DrySpace distinguishes AHAM capacity, separately published rated capacity, and maximum or saturation capacity. A product advertised around a 145-pint maximum claim may publish a much lower AHAM value under moderate test conditions.

For a fuller explanation, read AHAM PPD vs maximum PPD.

AprilAire coverage nuance

The current AprilAire records show headline manufacturer coverage statements that include broader whole-home or multi-space positioning, while their moisture-removal capacity is stored as separately labeled rated capacity rather than AHAM. Their maximum or saturation PPD fields remain unknown because the current normalized records do not contain verified maximum-removal values.

DrySpace has not imported a separate regional, loose-building, or tight-building AprilAire sizing table into this guide. The official AprilAire source links remain attached to the product records, and the headline coverage values are not silently replaced.

How DrySpace uses coverage

The crawl-space sizing assistant uses manufacturer-listed coverage as one verified eligibility signal. It does not represent that field as an independent DrySpace engineering calculation.

The assistant also considers floor area, built-in pump requirement, and verified minimum operating temperature when a temperature is entered. Moisture condition and crawl-space condition inputs are used for context and warnings, not a hidden capacity multiplier.

A practical homeowner framework

  1. 1. Check whether manufacturer-listed coverage is at least in the range of the crawl-space floor area.
  2. 2. Compare AHAM or separately labeled rated capacity alongside any maximum or saturation capacity claim.
  3. 3. Match drainage to the installation: gravity drain where practical, built-in pump where condensate must move upward or farther away.
  4. 4. Confirm the minimum operating temperature fits the space.
  5. 5. Address bulk-water intrusion, leaks, or enclosure problems as separate building issues rather than assuming a dehumidifier will solve them.
